The Three Series. A threefold doxography used to classify the literature and doctrines of the Great Perfection (rdzogs chen). The three are (1) Mind Series (sems sde), (2) Space Series (klong sde), and (3) Esoteric Precept Series (man ngag sde). The Mind Series represents the early “pristine” Great Perfection, whose literature was a kind of philosophical poetry, devoid of overt descriptions of ritual, mediative practice, subtle body theory, or the discourses of sex and death associated with normative tantra. The Space Series and the Esoteric Precept represent the gradual reabsorption of these issues, with the Esoteric Precept Series in particular being marked by discussions of death, the intermediate state, the subtle body, and vision.
