Passages

, ch. 6.

The four states or conditions of human life - waking, dreaming, deep sleep and a fourth - is a central topic of the Upaniṣads where it provides a psychological account of how the Self (ātman) prevails in varying states of concealment and un-concealment. In Buddhist Tantric discourse (especially the Kālacakra {116346} where the four states are correlated with various other four-fold conditions of human existence) it is not a Self that prevails throughout these four states but primordial awareness (jñāna, ye shes) in varying states of distortion. Moreover, the highly speculative "fourth" (turīya) is in no sense an ultimate in the Buddhist Tantric interpretation but merely a state of absorption (snyom 'jug) that obscures the authentic. See especially Zab mo nang don chapter six and the four available commentaries.
