Bön. The term “Bön” is used in several ways, the first of which is to refer to the pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet, which was suppressed by the Buddhists in the eighth and ninth centuries. This religion is imperfectly understood, and is thought to have focused on the figure of the king, and to have involved rituals carried out by priests called bönpos. The continuities between this pre-Buddhist religion and the other religious phenomena designated “Bön” is a matter of controversy.

Bön. A second use of the term “Bön” is to refer to the organized Bön religious tradition, which arose in Tibet in the 10th and 11th centuries. This tradition is organized around buddhas and holds buddhahood as its ultimate attainment. Rather than looking to the buddha Śākyamuni as its founding figure, however, Bön looks to the buddha Tönpa Shenrab (ston pa gshen rab). It is thus often described as a type of unorthodox Buddhism. The connections between this organized Bön and the pre-Buddhist religion called Bön are not well understood; adherents of organized Bön consider the two traditions to be identical.

Bön. The term Bön is occasionally used to refer to Tibetan popular religious practices, such as divination, the propitiation of local deities, and so forth. This usage often has a pejorative sense, the idea being that such “low” practices are the purview of Bön, rather than Buddhism.

Bön. The term bon has wide variety of meanings, including “doctrine,” “truth,” “reality,” and “phenomena.” In the Bön religion, it is used to cover the same range of meanings as the term chos (Skt. dharma) in Buddhism.
