  • བཙན་པོ (Tibetan, Tibetan script, Original)
    • > btsan po/ (Tibetan, Latin script, Transliteration-THL Extended Wylie Transliteration)
    • > tsenpo (Tibetan, Latin script, Transcription-THL Simplified Tibetan Transcription)

During Tibet’s dynastic period, this was the title reserved for the emperor. The term has connotations of “strength” and “power” (btsan sa, for instance, means “stronghold,” and btsan thabs means “forceful means”). The term may also associate the ruler with a class of divinities called btsan, which are associated with high cliffs and mountains, and are also regarded as fierce protectors of temples. The title is not a general word for “emperor,” but is used only to refer to the Tibetan emperor. Note also that Chinese histories did not translate the term, but used the phonetic form zànpǔ.
