Debating institution. A model of monastic study that is characteristic of the Geluk tradition. In a rtsod grwa, academics are centered around debate, particularly around debate of the “five great texts” (gzhung chen bka' bod lnga). This type of study contrasts to a “commentarial institution” (bshad grwa), characteristic of non-Geluk traditions, where academics are centered around the study of commentaries rather than debate.
