Note
In discussing the interface between sems and sems nyid (fourth of thirty-two) Padmasambhava defines each and indicates how reflective thinking and its reality constructing operations (sems) resolves into pre-reflective, non-subjectivizing Mind as such (sems nyid) once one cuts off its random flow. (See also 827.1)
by David Higgins
Among the ten seminal distinctions (shan 'byed) Yon tan rgya mtsho adopts as a framework for discussing the essentials of Rdzogs chen philosophy, he includes the distinction concerning the gist of the freedom mode (grol tshul). In this passage, mind (sems) is classified in terms of the five elemental forces and contrasted with sems nyid.
