Note
According to Rdzogs chen thought (as articulated in this poetic text by Klong chen pa), the pitfalls are generally associated with intellectual frameworks and hence apply only to the lower eight yānas but not to Rdzogs chen.
by David Higgins
passage translation (English)
The three pitfalls are as follows: when there is addiction to bliss, one falls into the realm of desires. When there is a grasping for lucency and the compulsion to subjectivize it, one falls into the realm of aesthetic forms. When one makes non dividedness into an intellectual construct and is thus not free from the intellect, one falls into the realm of formlessness.
Note
In general, 'Ba' ra ba says that "Anything you try to establish with the belief that it must be the definitive answer is a pitfall" [224]. In this passage, 'Ba' ra ba [279] discusses three pitfalls pertaining to the three realms. This follows Yang dgon pa.

passage translation (English)
Arising, abiding, freeing, in these three, arising and freeing flow uninterruptedly.
There being no interruption, the gap between cause and effect is cut off.
There being no cause and effect, the abyss of saṃsāra is cut off.
There being no abyss, where could there be any pitfall?
Note
Klong chen pa indicates that the idea of a place one falls is only an intellectual construct, linked with static notions of cause and effect and perdurance. In Rdzogs chen thinking, pitfalls are generally associated with intellectual systems which characterize the lower eight yānas (but not Rdzogs chen). See the entry from Gnas lugs mdzod kyi 'grel pa {116501:19a}.
