- Basic Syllabic Etymology:
-
Literally “manifest/higher-purified-five.” The term ngönjang (and its expanded version ngönpar jangchuppa, mngon par byang chub pa) was created to translate the Sanskrit abhisaṃbodhi, which connotes the highest, perfect enlightenment or awakening (that is, a Buddha's enlightenment). Here it refers to the five “awakenings” or “enlightenings" that result from the five-step process of deity yoga through which all Thus-Gone Ones lead the bodhisattva Sarvārthasiddhi (aka Siddhārtha) in the narrative recasting Shakyamuni’s enlightenment in tantric terms found at the beginning of the root Yoga Tantra text The Compendium of Reality of All Thus-Gone Ones.
Etymology
The five-step process by which the bodhisattva Sarvārthasiddhi (=Siddhārtha) becomes fully awakened in the narrative recasting Śākyamuni's enlightenment in tantric terms, which is found at the beginning of the root yoga tantra text The Compendium of Reality of All Thus-Gone Ones (de bzhin gshegs pa thams cad kyi de kho na nyid bsdus pa zhes bya ba theg pa chen po'i mdo, Sarva-tathāgata-tattva-saṃgraha-nāma-mahāyāna-sūtra). This five-step process is the earliest and most complete presentation of deity yoga found in a Buddhist tantra. Deity yoga is the practice of deconstructing one's identity and recreating oneself as a fully-awakened buddha, which is found only in tantric forms of Buddhism and is one of its unique features. The five-step process presented in The Compendium of Reality of All Thus-Gone Ones serves as the blueprint for generation-stage (bskyed rim, utpatti-krama) practices in later tantric Buddhist systems such as Mahāyoga and Niruttarayoga tantra.
