- > chos skyong / (Tibetan, Latin script, Transliteration-THL Extended Wylie Transliteration)
A deity or demon who maintains and protects the Buddhist religion. In general, these spirits are fierce in appearance. Typically, they were once vicious agents who inhabited the Tibetan landscape and were converted to Buddhism by charismatic Buddhist teachers. As hybrid beings, their ferocity is now used to protect the Buddhist religion against its enemies.
- Basic Syllabic Etymology:
- Literally “religion/teachings-protect/nurture,” this syllabic meaning indicates that these spirits protect the Buddhist religion as well as its teachings. In this context, skyong is understood in regards to its multiple definitions. Beyond protecting the Dharma, these spirits sustain, maintain, and manage the oral and textual transmission.
