- ཐམ་ཀ (Tibetan, Tibetan script, Original)
- > tham ka (Tibetan, Latin script, Transliteration-THL Extended Wylie Transliteration)
A seal or stamp, such as a red seal used to close and mark the authenticity of a letter. Also spelled tham ga. Note that the term technically refers to the stamp itself; the implement used to perform the stamping is a thel rtse or thel tse.
- Historical Etymology:
- tham ka is a transfer from the Uighur thamγa (“brand mark”). It is, however, treated as a native Tibetan word, and thus used to form compounds such as rgyal tham “royal seal.”
