David Higgins Lexicon of Tibetan Buddhist Topics and Terminology

Sanskrit:
śraddhā

In Buddhist thought, confidence (Sanskrit: śraddhā, Tibetan: dad pa) has always been the antithesis of faith. In the Atthasalini of Buddhaghosa (5th century A.D.), a commentary on the Dhammasangani of the Abhidhamma pitaka, confidence is distinguished from the "mere acquiescence to words" based on erroneous views. Buddhaghoṣa's distinction is made in response to the climate of unbridled speculation, with its corollary of faiths in various speculative viewpoints, against which early Buddhism reacted. Later Mahāyāna interpretations distinguished different forms of confidence, the most common classification being three-fold. According to Guenther (Jewel Ornament of Liberation {116291:27:n31}), "The triple division of confidence is particular to the Vijñānavāda school of Buddhism (Triṃśikā, 26; Abhidharmasamuccaya, 6; Vijñāptimātrasiddhi, 320). The Abhidharmakośa (III, 25) and its Bhāṣya [156] know the third definition given in the text" (ie. dang ba'i dad pa).

passage translation (English)

Confidence is a decisive conviction in the (relationship between) actions and their consequences, a mental lucidity regarding the (four) truths, and a longing for the three precious jewels. (It pertains to) what is real, what has significance and what is possible (respectively). Confidence operates in these three ways such that its decisiveness aspect concerns what is real but which may or may not have significance, its lucidity aspect concerns what is real and has significance, and its longing aspect concerns one's capacity to actualize or cultivate the attainment of what is real and has significance.

With regard to mental lucidity, since confidence runs counter to mental turbidness, in its association with the latter the turbid turmoil of the emotions and proximate emotions ceases and the mind, depending on this sense of confidence, becomes increasingly clear. Thus it is termed "mental lucidity". It moreover serves as the basis for sustained interest.

Note

This threefold classification of confidence was followed in the majority of Tibetan lam rim works with the exception of Rnying ma works which expand the types of confidence to six or four.

'Jigs med gling pa notes [336.1] that the first two are confidence of the beginner who (strives) not to be consumed by doubt (that this confidence will be) robbed by circumstances; the last two involve no longer being confused about the foundations of one's aspiration (teacher, three jewels etc.). See also 337 where 'Jigs med gling pa argues that confidence serves to counteract the deeply ingrained tendency to disregard, or remain complacent in the face of impermanence and death.

6 Fold Confidence:

Klong chen pa Yid bzhin mdzod kyi 'grel pa {116201:745}

In a chapter devoted to the subject of confidence (ch. 15) Klong chen pa provides the most detailed discussion on the topic to be found in any text, Indian or Tibetan. (See my translation). The following indicates the six types of confidence as the author relates them to the traditional three types.

(Traditional) (Yid bzhin mdzod {116191})

(2) Enthusiasm

(1) Lucidity (3) Devotion

(4) Lucidity

(2) Decisiveness (1) Longing

(5) Decisiveness

Klong chen pa proceeds to give an exhaustive analysis of each of the six types with respect to its essence, definition, classification, analogy, indication of its having taken root in one's being, and benefits

Klong chen pa Man ngag mdzod, Gangtok ed. {116526:23.2}

Here Klong chen pa provides a different set of six kinds of confidence which includes two from the traditional triad (dang ba'i and yid ches):

dad pas khams gso thub pa'i chos drug ni

mos pa'i dad pas gsol 'debs bla ma sgom

gus pa'i dad pas dkon mchog mchod la brtson

by David Higgins

, 2: 334.6.

As a prelude to discussing four-fold confidence (ranging from intellectual assent to sympathetic feeling), 'Jigs med gling pa emphasizes the need to recognize the errors in one's own world view and philosophy (following the example of Bram ze chen po, Saraha) before setting out on the inner path of practice. He concludes his discussion of unswerving (phyir mi ldog) confidence [335.6] by citing the example of an Indian Buddhist teacher whose faith remained unshaken even after being taken in by an Indian Hindu extremist (Tīrthaṅkara) who proceeded to warn the Buddhist that he "better follow my god and world view and join my philosophical school, because if you do not, I will kill you."
