Passage
48 rtag tu dran dang shes bzhin bag yod kyis [595]
mig dge spang zhing dge chos rgya mtsho bsgrub
Note
In this passage, Klong chen pa discusses inspection (dran pa), sustained alertness (shes bzhin) and conscientiousness (bag yod) as the three "most important disciplines for protecting one's mind from the throng of emotions," thereby preventing one from failing in the bodhicitta. The theme of being vigilant throughout one's daily activities is discussed on 601 f. (see quote on 613).
by David Higgins
passage translation (English)
...So long as you have no attained stability, you must ensure that you are not separated from true inspection becuase this is the very basis of the path (of existential growth). Although it may not continuously come to your help at first, the more sustained it becomes the closer at hand it will be. So long as inspection is not adversely effected by circumstances but is left to itself, it gradually arises as a continuous process. Then insepction and openness will arise simultaneously... (see translation for remainder of passage)
Note
In this passage, 'Ba' ra ba discusses the function of inspection which, like a sentinel or watchman, ensures that one is not "caught off guard" by the forces of distraction and conformity [224]. He later takes up the topic of genuine or true inspection which is the "witness", the goal reaching into the path.
