- > catur-mudrā (Sanskrit, Latin script, Translation)
In yogatantra systems, there are four gestures or seals associated with each deity that are deployed in contemplative and ritual practice: the great seal (phyag rgya chen po, mahāmudrā), pledge seal (dam tshig gi phyag rgya, samayamudrā), doctrine seal (chos kyi phyag rgya, dharmamudrā), and action seal (las kyi phyag rgya, karmamudrā). While the latter three are hand- and posture-gestures, the first is imagining oneself in the physical form of the deity.
- Basic Syllabic Etymology:
-
Literally "hand [honorific]-seal-four." The meaning is that the four seals stamp or seal the practitioner as the deity, with the sense that the practitioner's identity does not pass beyond that of being a fully-awakened being. This derives from the meaning of "seal" in the context of royal missives, which when stamped with the ruler's seal mandate that the receiver must execute the instructions and cannot transgress what the instructions prescribe. Thus, the practitioner is "sealed" as the deity and cannot pass beyond identification with the deity.
