Note
Yon tan rgya mtsho concisely describes the mngon shes drug by way of commentary to a verse in Yon tan mdzod rtsa ba {115776} that highlights the qualities specific to the Buddha ratna (see under sangs rgyas as one of three jewels for a summary of the qualities of spangs and rtogs).
by David Higgins
Atiśa devotes the fifth chapter of his Pañjikā {116056} to the six abhijñās (mngon shes). See A Lamp for the Path, tr. by Sherburne {116276:114}. These six direct intuitions, of which the first five may be possessed by saints as well as ordinary beings, the last belonging only to saints (arya) are: divine vision (of others dying and being reborn), divine hearing (of human and divine voices), knowing other people's minds, recollection of former births, miraculous powers and the intuition that all impurities have been destroyed. See Abhidharmakośa {116141:ch7:vv:37-56}. On their historical development in Buddhist literature, see H. Dayal, The Bodhisattva Doctrine in Buddhist Sanskrit Literature {116241:106-34}.
In this passage, Klong chen pa lists the mngon shes drug by way of commentary to a verse from the Abhisamayālaṅkāra {116316} on the qualities of the Dharmakāya (details under the entry from Yon tan rin po che mdzod kyi 'grel pa nyi zla'i sgron me {116381:492.4}).
In this passage, 'Jigs med gling pa elaborates on the mngon shes drug as special internal capabilities of the Buddha ratna that pertain to understanding. (See the entry from Bden gnyis shing rta {115781:792.1} for details and different interpretation of these).
On the subject of bsam gtan gyi pha rol tu phyin pa, 'Jigs med gling pa discusses the mngon shes drug, citing the Abhidharmakośa {116141}.
